Species : E. Ferus
subspecies : E. ferus caballus
In the mid Pleistocene, there were vast herds of varius Equus species in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. However the majority of these animals died out in a series of extinctions in the late Pleistocene which may have been caused by a combination of climate change and overhunting by humans (Hunt).
There are three subspecies of E. ferus that survived into historical times- these include
E. ferus caballus : the modern day horse
E. ferus ferus : the European WIld Horse or Tarpan (extinct in 1909)
E. ferus przewalski : Przewalski's Horse- located in Asia- populations were re-establiched in the wild through the international efforts of several zoos.
