In the current day and age, the horse is a friend, a partner, and an athlete. But how did this happen? The modern day horse is very different in terms of size, diversity and even general appearence than the original equid ancestors that roamed the earth millions of years ago. In just the past 4000 years humans have developed and selectively bred horses to produce a variety of breeds, colors, and body types suitable for a huge array of activities. In the pages of this website, we will not be focusing on this topic except in passing, but will instead focus on how Equus ferus caballus, the modern day horse, evolved over the past 60 million years.
